My First Empties! June/July 2015

Hello makeup lovers! I have been hoarding empty beauty products for quite some time. Click to watch my thoughts or read below.

♥ Products Mentioned ♥

Revlon Lip Butter Lipstick “Strawberry Shortcake”

This is probably the only lipstick I've finished off. I bought quite a few shades from this collection and this is the shade that I gravitated toward most. The finish was truly like butter, sheer enough to be worn as an everyday color, but can be worn a little opaque as well. The downside to the consistency, because of its softness I probably layered on a lot of product and finished it faster than I should have.

Fresh Sugar – Lip Treatment SPF 15

I'm on the fence on this product. It's definitely a maintainer and prevented me from getting dry lips during the winter, but I can still get flaky lips. I have repurchased this item, but for the price of $22.50 I probably will pass if I don't fall in love with it.

NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencil “French Fries”

This is my favorite base shade for a neutral smoky eye. Jumbo Eye Pencils have been a cult favorite for quite some time. I love the creaminess for blending and really gives a boost to your eyeshadow pigmentation. The downside of these is that I haven't found a sharpener for it and I ended up wasting a lot of product that I couldn't get to, however I did repurchase this shade.

Too Faced Shadow Insurance

My favorite shadow primer! I love the consistency of this product over UDPP. It's more of a liquid and works for my normal to oily lids. I'm on my third or fourth tube! I also enjoy the tube packaging so I can squeeze out just the right amount. I have started using MAC Soft Ochre, but this will always be a favorite in my heart.

Stila Convertible Eye Color Dual Shadow and Liner “Onyx”

This is probably a product I regret buying. I was convinced to get this from a Sephora employee and the creaminess ran down my face easily! The white shadow shade was super white and can be pretty if used right, but I just didn't enjoy this for the price tag.

L'Oreal Lineur Intense "Carbon Black"

I've owned both the felt tips and brush liners in these, and I have a love-hate relationship. I prefer the brush tip for sure. I love the liquid formula and how easy it is to use. My only gripe is that I wish it was waterproof! It flakes when you rub your eyes and disappears with water. Eep!

Katie B Cosmetics Mineal Magic “G200”

This product is a self setting mineral foundation. It was great in a pinch when I needed to even out my skin tone on the go. The liquid set to powder and had a great finish.

E.l.f. Tinted Moisturizer “Nude”

Smelled like aloe. Very liquidy and runny. Light coverage. That's what you get for the price.

Revlon ColorStay “Warm Golden” & “Natural Tan”

Another one of my favs! This has been my holy grail drug store foundation for years. I love it even more mixed in with Tarte Maracuja Oil. The foundation gives coverage. The biggest con is the smell, but I've gotten used to it. I am wearing "Golden Beige" here.

NYX Stay Matte Not Flat Powder Foundation “Soft Beige”

I loved this foundation as a full coverage setting powder. I didn't really like it on its own because I ca never get powders to cover my broken capillaries and redness. I have repurchased this item but I have yet to use it.

MAC Prep+Prime Translucent Finishing Powder & Make Up For Ever High Definition Powder

I owned these when I probably couldn't appreciate them. They did get me flashback in photos but did a great job setting my foundation and gave a great finish in person and in video.

MAC Fix+

This bottle was before MAC reformulated Fix+. Again, I owned this before I could really appreciate the product, but at the time I felt it didn't do much but refresh my face after putting a pound of makeup on. I repurchased the new formulation and the new one performs great.

L'oreal Go 360 Clean Deep Exfoliating Scrub

When I started actually taking care of my skin, this was one of the products I used. This product got my face clean. However, when I was getting toward the end I was actually breaking out more from it. My face most likely got used to the ingredients or doesn't respond well to salicylic anymore. I still have a bit of product left and I definitely won't be repurchasing.  As far as the scrublet, I felt it worked at first as well, but to be honest I don't feel like the silicone protrusions work scrubbing my pores.

Up & Up Makeup Remover

This is the Target brand of makeup remover. This product felt oily on the skin but got the job done. Will not repurchase.

Neutrogena makeup cleansing wipes

These! What was my life without these! I recently went on a trip without them with intentions of buying them and I felt like I was about to die! These do a great job of removing a full face of makeup with half of a wipe. When I have more stubborn days sometimes I get residual makeup when I cleanse and tone my face, but that's probably more attributed to me not wanting to use a whole wipe for one day.

Tresemme Tres Two Hairspray

My fav for years! This product allows me to get a soft hold without the crunchiness. It also has a great scent. I usually spray this when I curl my hair.

CHI Silk Infusion

I've always had this laying around but never really appreciated it. This product is applied to preferably wet hair and blow dried out. It provides your hair with oil and makes my dry hair silky smooth. Also has a great salon product smell.

Tresemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo

Really disappointed that the spray nozzle broke! I went through a whole can before this one, and when I try to use the broken one it leaves me with little flakes of product.

That is all for now. I had to cut out some products for time constraints, so hopefully I will have some products at the end of August or September!

πŸš— Houston Travel Diary: Shaved Ice🍧, Best Hotdogs, Crazy Gas Station!

⏩Hey guys! It's been a while since I've vlogged! This is my first food vlog so I'm new to explaining what I'm doing while trying to live my life. Mostly shot on my Samsung S5! This was my last trip to Houston and I'm always asked about recommendations on where to go. Luckily, I have family who lives there so I'm always trying new places! I also go quite often so I plan to continue these in the future, hopefully shorter and more steady!

 Tan Tan on Bellaire

Tan Tan is one of those restaurants with that you just can't stay away from once you're hooked. Known for their Banh Bot Chien and terrible service, I always find myself here. My last experience took the cake. Meeting people in Houston is a task. We waited for my cousin to arrive and when he was 5 minutes away, we put in the order for our hotpot. The entire time we were wondering why the portion was so small compared to last time on top of the price going up. When we received the bill, we found out that they only put in the order for two! We repeatedly told our server it was going to be three and she kept treating us like it was just us two (two place settings when asked). No bueno for two hungry guys and a foodie. But the food is just so good when it's done right! The struggle.

Kung Fu Tea on Bellaire

Look guys. This place is bomb. I went three times in this trip! I've had a lot of bubble tea in HOU, but this place has great drinks. The boba is perfectly sweetened, and I normally don't care for boba. Milk tea, yum. Taro slush, yum. Egg pudding, SO YUM. Will be back.

Whataburger

You're probably wondering why I chose to vlog about Whataburger. It's a franchise that I just don't have close to me. My cousins introduced me to the A1 Thick & Hearty. This looks like it'll clog your insides but it will touch your inner fatty. So rich and hearty. The sauce. My gawd.

Smashburger

I JUST came from having a bad experience from a Smashburger in New Orleans, and I was really disappointed in a Houston location as well. I received flack from a cousin of mine for being so basic, and he was probably right. My other cousin and I were just hungry from our grocery run. The chipotle seasoned bun was aromatic, but very disappointing

Pho Ve Dem on Bellaire

This place was okay. Standard bowl of pho with a little something lacking. Pros are that they open a little late and housemade durian ice cream if you're into that thing!

Tea Bar & Organics on Bellaire

This is a boba type place that opens a little late. If you dine in they give you your drinks, shaken, in large mugs to enjoy. I walked away with a taro with egg pudding. Their egg pudding is not perfectly silky with a little bit of a stiff texture on the outsides. I had my very first milk tea here years ago. Decent for studying.

Killen's Barbeque

This place is rated #2 best barbeque for a reason. I thoroughly enjoyed their meats. I admit I'm not much of an expert on BBQ, but this packed some flavor. My cousin and I loved their coffee sauce and while it sounds peculiar, it's definitely worth a try. I loved the brisket but my cousin did not. Next time I would pass on the pinto beans, it wasn't really what we ordered anyway.

Sushi King on Kirby

It's really hard to find good sushi in Houston that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I'm used to a certain price point and quality and that combination hardly exists here. Sushi always feels more expensive and less filling. This place was decent. I loved the ferris wheel roll for sure. The cowboy roll was also good and everything else was just meh. Ambiance was classy but the clientele was not as much so.

Juice Box on Bellaire

My must stop place in Houston. A part of me dies when I don't get a chance to come here on a visit. Despite the name, they are known for their Thai shaved ice. Perfectly shaved ice that's nice and fluffy with various fruit and condensed milk. The combination is just divine. I recently started to add flan and it has the perfect texture for me. The only con is that the fruit can be hit or miss, most of the time when strawberries are out of season they are very sour. They also sell jasmine fruit teas, hence the name.

Cajun Craven on Beamer Rd

For this Lousiana girl, Houston crawfish takes a lot to impress me. Most places slather the outsides with sauce but the meat itself is nearly tasteless. I've heard that they boil in chicken broth then toss the crawdaddies. This place's sauce was spot on and the meat wasn't too bad. The spicy craven was a little too spicy and salty for my taste, but this place is a definite recommend. Prices aren't too bad either, MKT price was between 6.99 and 7.99 at the time.

Comedy Showcase on Fuqua

A recap of how this works: pay the price of the ticket depending on the day (weekends or bigger headliners are more expensive) and you must purchase two food/drink items per person. We ended up getting fried appetizers and it was so heavy. Drinks were fairly strong, but I'm weak so hey. We had a "Last Comic Standing" runner up as our headliner and he was very entertaining. There were two smaller comedians to warm up the crowd. I would definitely do it again, but next time I would just get drinks.

Yo Yo's Hot Dogs in Rice Village

Yo. These are the best hot dogs you will have in your life. Open Thurs-Sat, it is a little hot dog cart run by a hard-working [Korean?] man. His timing is impeccable. He toasts the buns, uses delicious Nathan's hotdogs, and tops with curry ketchup, kimchee mayo, honey mustard, cream cheese, perfect caramelized onions and [store bought] fried onions. Because of him, I always top my hotdogs with mayo, sriracha, ketchup, and mustard now; TRY IT. Also don't be discouraged by the cream cheese. It takes on a savory flavor and the texture is like a nacho cheese when melted. Ugh. So good. Unfortunately this time mine was ordered before I got there so I didn't get to vlog his process. =(

Ruggles Black on Kirby

OMG. Houstonians will always tell you all Ruggles are the same. INCORRECT. Ruggles Black is a classy/club vibe version of Ruggles with a Vietnamese executive chef. I am used to going to Ruggles Green, a comfortable cafe with lunch-type food and great white chocolate bread pudding. The boyfriend and I came dressed in gym clothes. We felt so out of place and awkward. The markup for the food was SO HIGH. $20 for a bowl of pho? I'd better be able to feed my whole family with one bowl. I will tell you that the duck pizza was amazing. It was reminiscent of banh mi with the pickled carrots, with a great hoisin sauce concoction and something I've never seen before: poached egg on a pizza. We also had brussels and some sort of either miso or yuzu tuna (it wasn't memorable), and the flavor profiles were so similar to the pizza also being Vietnamese fusion. The white chocolate bread pudding just did not taste the same being in a different setting and probably at a higher markup.

Gordough (from Austin, TX)

My cousin brought this home from a food truck when he went to Austin. By this time, I was so full of dairy from visiting Kung Fu so many times, I couldn't take anything else indulgent. I did enjoy the pudding doughnut, but I can't really form an opinion when I only picked at them.

I do intend on visiting Houston again soon, but I don't have a set date! Stay tuned, and next time I'll try to improve my vlogging skills.

Maybelline Rebel Bloom Lipsticks

Newly uploaded video to YouTube! Please watch.

In December Maybelline released their "Rebel Bloom" spring 2015 collection. Their lipsticks are a selection of vibrant shades. The advertised main ingredient is honey nectar.

Overview
The formulation on all these shades are different. Overall they have slip to the texture feeling very similar to buttery lipsticks. Some are opaque and bright, but patchy. Other more sheer shades are still bright but a tad more wearable. You have to build color with these, but for some no matter how much you load on you can still see patches of your lips.

The packaging is the familiar Color Sensational long tube with a fun purple cap. It is noted that all shades are pretty true to the bottom sticker, with the exception of Orchid Ecstasy. Also something to be mindful of, is the classic Color Sensational "play-doh" smell. The smell will go away with wear if it's something you're not bothered by.

They swatch very well on the arm but on pigmented lips apply patchy and not true to color. The pigmentation is there, but the formula stops the shades from being one uniform color.

700 - Barely Bloomed
Barely bloomed is a true nude color with orange undertones. It is pigmented but I had trouble applying color to my lip line.

705 - Blushing Bud
Blushing Bud is one of my favorite shades from the line. It is a rosy mauve and a great "my lips but better shade." It is a great everyday wearable color. This one applied fairly evenly.

710 - Petal Pink
The next 3 pink shades start to look very similar. Petal Pink is a cool toned baby pink. It is very opaque. I described this one as "old Nicki" lipstick.

715 - Hibiscus Pop
Hibiscus Pop is a medium pink color. It looks warm in the tube but on my lips looked cool. This one is on the sheer side, so it looks similar to the other pink shades.

720 - Power Peony
Power Peony is again a cool pink, slightly darker than Petal Pink.

725 - Lilac Flush
Such a beautiful light and cool purple! It's a lot less intimidating than it seems. This is a must have from the line if you're feeling adventurous. It is very opaque and the payoff is worth it.

730 - Orchid Ecstasy
Orchid Ecstasy is what drew me to the line but the most disappointing. I was hoping it was going to come out purple like in the tube but it didn't. It swatches on the arm very well, but it applies the most sheer of them all. Instead of being a purple with pink undertones, it mixes with my lips to create a more magenta shade. If you are already stuck with this, I suggest muting out the lips with foundation or a nude lipstick.

735 - Rose Flush
Rose Flush is a warm toned red. It applies sheer but still has a good payoff, leading to this wearable red lip.

740 - Coral Burst
Coral Burst is my absolute favorite out of this line for a pop of color. I don't own many coral items, and this one is definitely a good one to start with. It applies sheer, but is so beautiful and wearable. It is the only shade I have really gone out in public in.

745 - Peach Poppy
Peach Poppy is such a great light peach shade, but not exactly true to color. It is a lot lighter in swatches than in the tube. It was hard to replicate the picture to what it looks like in real life.

→ Jaclyn Hill Favorites Review and Swatches | Releasing Again Soon ←

Click to watch my latest video on the Jaclyn Hill Favorites palette.

Hello readers!

I have had this palette for about 2 months now and I'm kinda digging it. At first I was apprehensive but this palette has really grown on me. I had to cut out quite a bit of footage for sake of time, so I figured I would share my notes and my story on this palette.

Morphe Brushes started preorder on the limited edition Jaclyn Hill Favorites palette on New Years day, 12AM PST. I saw videos on this palette New Years Eve and I felt I just had to have it. I live in CST so I waited until 2AM for this product to release. Bear in mind that this was one of the first times I ordered something online on the release date. I'm normally the type that waits around for second batches of things after the kinks are sorted out. Not this time. I was ready to go, credit card in hand, to start clicking away. I knew the traffic was going to be bad, but not this bad. I waited for hours to get through with a bunch of other girls trying as well. We tweeted away at Jaclyn and Morphe, who were silent and released no statements til later on in the day. I grew impatient enough to create a meme to alleviate my agitation. I titled the photo "fix it Jesus."

Alas, it did not help. The servers were obviously overloaded. But I kept clicking away for 2 hours, getting more and more of my information through each time. Finally at 4AM CST I got my credit card information in, and crossed my fingers as the servers moved at dial-up speed.

Then my card declined. What? Or was it the site rejecting everything? I couldn't tell at the time, everything was moving so slowly.

I kept trying for another hour and gave up at 5AM. I was so incessant. It was my money and time invested. The adult in me, however, told me I had work in the morning.

I wake up at 9AM with work at 10. I open my text messages to discover my card indeed did decline FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER due to fraudulence. By now the traffic died down and I was able to nab the palette within 20 minutes.

In the morning Jaclyn released a statement from Morphe that the servers were supposed to be able to handle the large traffic, but some "hackers" were sending "fake traffic" to slow the servers down. I don't know if I'm supposed to believe that. Forever skeptical.

The ship date was scheduled for January 23 but I received my palette maybe a week before that. The tracking I was given states it was shipped on 01/08 and received 01/13. Pretty fast since they are based in California.

Now I've had ample time to play with this palette and my opinion changed greatly on this. When I first received it I was a little underwhelmed. Some colors didn't show up as I wanted, my eyes got irritated which they rarely ever do. I applied the colors for filming and I was impressed by the finish. I literally could not stop staring. The quality is good for the price. Caveat emptor (buyer beware).

That being said, the quality of this shadow is average. Shadows are dry but not chalky in most colors. Payoff of shimmers are great but mattes are a little patchy. Pigmentation is good but not all are true to color. Blendability is surprisingly good. Packing is sturdy plastic with a flimsy closure. And the tone of this has been unanimous; This palette is as warm-toned as they get! It's actually great for everyday wear and travel due to its variety of shimmery lid colors and matte transition colors.

My biggest gripe with this is that it's made in China. I took a look at all my high quality products: I saw Paris, Canada, USA. What did I have from China? A multi-color palette I got a long time ago with sub par quality. I was not surprised in the slightest. It's how they drive the price down. Most likely this is a bulk product with the Morphe branding slapped on. That's probably why Jaclyn's name didn't make its way onto the palette itself.

So price onto details.

Price: $27.99 ($1 an eyeshadow is frequently said)
Discount was 10% with code JACATTACK ($2.80 off)
Shipping: flat rate of $7.99
Grand total: $33.18

I wanted to take advantage of the flat rate shipping and order brushes in tandem, but I was just trying to get the order in for the palette in before I got kicked out. $7.99 is almost highway robbery for something this light, so I am a little upset I couldn't get more in my cart to compensate. At least I was given are large box with ample amounts of packaging popcorn and bubble wrap so it wasn't damaged at all.

They have restocked their single eyeshadows so if you want just a few colors from the palette and can't wait here they are. They can be ordered at $2 a piece so if you're looking for value I would wait.

Here are a few screen grabs of the arm swatches. I did film my swatches 4 times over and this final one I captured with a 50mm 1.4 lens. The lens is very temperamental so my clips were a bit fuzzy, not to mention awkwardly angled.

Morphe is expecting to release this palette again sometime soon. They released a statement that the palettes made its way to the East Coast on February, but due to the strikes shipment was stuck there. Now that's something I believe. They are currently awaiting the palettes to be delivered to them so they can set a solid date.
