Hey loves! Earlier in the year I had the pleasure of attending Youtube Creator Day and Content lab in Texas. These are free events around the globe hosted by YouTube that can be found in the events tab at the YouTube Creator Hub. Creator Day is open to creators with 1,000+ subscribers and YouTube goes over ways to grow your channel similar to what goes on in the Creator Academy and chances to network with creators in the area. This event normally includes local guest speakers from successful channels. Content Lab is a newer concept, open to creators with 10,000+ subscribers, and goes over new content strategies in a group setting. Both days close out with a happy hour for creators to freely network and kick back with a glass of wine. YouTube has changed this from individual happy hours to one for both events. Please refer to the video vlog above for a visual!
DAY 1
On the first day I attended Creator Day in Houston at Dukessa in the Galleria area. I was reunited with some creators I met at last year's Creator Day. I was stuck to the side of my good friend Mia from the channel littleblackdress88. The day started with coffee & breakfast and a little bit of swag was there to meet us at our seats. The programming of what they went over was very similar to things I have learned from the Creator Academy. They did talk about new products to come and also introduced the Creator Hub. There was a light lunch and lots of collaboration scenarios with other creators. This was a challenge since there were creators from all sorts of niches. A way that this Creator Day differed from the last, was that YouTube had us break up into our respective verticals, so all the beauty, fashion, lifestyle channels were allowed to commune and discuss content strategies specific to us. The event wrapped with 3 guest channels, RawBeautyKristina, My Natural Sistas, and IamKayElle (formerly secretlifeofabionerd) speaking on their success on YouTube and hurdles along the way. Happy Hour followed with hors d'oeuvres, drinks, and opportunities to speak to all at the event. I had the chance to speak to KL and it was so surreal since she is considered an OG of YouTube and I've watched her for years.
DAY 2
I was very excited to attend the newly created Content Lab and I came in having no idea what to expect. The Houston Content Lab was held at the same venue as the aforementioned Creator Day. Here I ran into a lot more creators I saw last year, as most were above the 10K subscriber mark and growing. We were broken into groups and given a channel (who volunteered themselves) to critique. The entire day is dedicated to applying new content strategies to your channel and learn how to apply them to your own. The ideas are then pitched to everyone else at the event. There are fun activities for chances to earn prizes as well. My team won for the best pitch and we won play button pillows. Everyone was given a YouTube power bank for attending. This event has very helpful since I have taken a lot of courses in the Creator Academy previously and it really helps you to find what is potentially wrong with your channel and possible reasons why you are not growing. This event ended with its own happy hour and I had a blast reconnecting with familiar faces.DAY 3
For the final day I attended another Content Lab in Austin at the Old Pecan downtown. It was my first time in Austin and I loved the artsy charm. At the time, it was the furthest west I've ever been! The programming was the same as Houston, so I was there mainly to network and experience Austin.I was so inspired by the creativity of the people in Austin. The catering done by Old Pecan was so amazing, with amazing breakfast, coffee, fresh fruit, and a 3 course lunch with local artisan beer. This definitely ended my run of events on a good note.
I was not able to register for Creator Day in Austin at the time at the Google space. I will however be attending Creator Day at the Google Fiber pop up space in October. At this pop-up space they will introduce a Music Workshop specifically for musicians and labels.
